Leaving Bucharest for a nine-day tour of rural Romania, there were many tourist destinations as I traveled through the regions of Transylvania, Maramures, and Bucovina, but my intention was to explore the place and its people in a lyrical way focusing mostly on everyday life. I discovered a region that has retained much of the culture, religion, and ways of doing things of an agrarian community from centuries past, reflecting a simpler and harder, but perhaps more meaningful, way of life.
