The luminescent colors of geological landscapes seem other-worldly to me like a Kodachrome universe from a C.S. Lewis fantasy novel. Earth’s geological events occur in deep time on a grand scale as the planet heaves and splits apart mountains, basins, and water features over millions of years. Out of the chaos a new order emerged on our present-day earth: dramatic and rugged mountains, the ceaseless thunder of powerful waterfalls, and the bold palette of natural colors I marvel at. Perhaps we all don’t appreciate this beautiful gift enough. After all we must remember that the earth owes us nothing.
